Doing ePublishing and Publishing Right - The Beginning of an Idea

Success in Failure

Death of a Comic and Birth of an Idea

As often happens with a great idea it starts with the death of another, in this case a hibernation of a great idea. I was trying to keep the title AB Normal alive but as my partners in crime became more and more involved in their individual lives it became increasingly difficult; so I decided to shelve AB Normal until I had the time to rethink it and retool it.

I had another idea for a comic but wasn't exactly ready to start working on it yet so I decided to start checking into just how hard it actually was going to be to get a print publication out. I'd like to say I wasn't surprised, I expected the worst after my experience with trying to get my novel published, but I was. If you can believe it, it's actually more of a pain in the ass to get a comic published through a publishing company than it is a novel. That's the part that surprised me.

Deciding that paper publication wasn't the way to start off I started looking into ePublishing and I'll be damned if Apple wasn't rocking the boat on ePublishing too with it's price fixing. All the time I was trying to figure out how to get someone else to either publish or ePublish my comic I kept thinking there has to be a better way. I slowly found myself turning from trying to figure out how to get someone else to either publish or ePublish my work to figuring out how to do it myself. Well I figured it out. Turns out it wasn't as hard as I expected it to be.

The fun part was in figuring out the traditional publishing model, how it is broken, and how to fix it.
